Биография[править | править код]

Детство и юность провёл во Флориде. В 1970-е годы был последователем гуру Йоги Бхаджан, чьё учение представляло собой синтез кундалини-йоги и сикхизма.[1] Разочаровавшись, основал своё собственное религиозное движение, которое, однако, просуществовало недолго.[1]

Образование и научная деятельность[править | править код]

Получил степень доктора философии по религиоведению в Уэльском университете в Лампетере. В 1990-е годы выступил автором и соавтором нескольких справочных изданий по новым религиозным движениям. В 1992 году основал религиоведческую ассоциацию AWARE, которая объявила своей основной целью «расширение интеллектуальной и религиозной свободы посредством просвещения публики относительно различных религий и культур, включая альтернативные религиозные группы».[2] Ассоциация AWARE стремилась, используя научный подход, проинформировать учёных и простое население о случаях притеснения религиозных меньшинств в США и других странах, а также оказать поддержку американским властям в их борьбе против религиозной дискриминации.[2] Кроме Льюиса, ключевую роль в становлении AWARE как «анти-анти-культовой организации» сыграли такие известные учёные, как Эйлин Баркер, Дэвид Бромли и Джефри Хэдден. Они посчитали нужным создать сообщество квалифицированных учёных, которые могли бы участвовать в качестве экспертов в судебных процессах.[3]

В настоящее время является главным редактором научного журнала Alternative Spirituality & Religion Review (ASSR);[4], членом редакции «Марбургского журнала религии», главным редактором книжной серии о современных религиях, публикуемой издательством Brill; а также редактором серии Controversial New Religions, публикуемой издательством Ashgate  (англ.) (рус..[5] Кроме этого, является сооснователем Международного общества по исследованию новых религий.[6]

Преподавал в Университете Де Поля и Висконсинском университете  (англ.) (рус.. Был ассоциированным профессором религиоведения в Университете Тромсё и почётный старший научный сотрудник в Уэльском университете в Лампетере[6]. В настоящее время является профессором Школы философии Уханьского университета[7].

Критика[править | править код]

Ряд учёных и представителей антикультового движения подвергли AWARE резкой критике. Льюиса, в частности, обвинили в том, что он слишком близко общался с членами НРД. Особо резкой критике Льюис подвергся за защиту Аум синрикё. Вскоре после газовых атак в токийском метро Льюис и его коллега-религиовед Джон Гордон Мелтон отправились за счёт Аум синрикё в Японию, где на пресс-конференции объявили, что согласно полученным ими сведениям и материалам, Аум Синрикё была непричастны к атакам, так как не обладала возможностью производить газ зарин.[8] Расследование японских властей показало обратное, что привело в обществе к «кризису доверия» к религиоведам и религиоведению как науке.[9] Происшедшее вызвало серьёзную озабоченность у членов консультативного совета AWARE, что привело к расформированию ассоциации в декабре 1995 года.[3]
